I live in the USA so can only get my local airport beacon. There is a lot of noise from the display but you can turn that off holding down the 1 and 3 buttons simultaneously. A small negative.- MW is meh on internal antenna, excellent on whip when away from RF interference (and can turn off the display to get rid of the display noise). I still give the slight dx nod to the CCRadio 3 with its auto tune and 8" ferrite. That is still quite a feat.- SW is very good. I cannot say its better than my H501 or Eton Elite Exec. But it's up there. It does chug like the Eton. I knew there was no SSB going in. No sync of course.- Good sound for the size. Comes with nice hard case. Tons of user selectable options. Good quality build.

Great Performance, Small Radio that Requires Reading the Manual; No Batteries Included.I have reviewed a number of portable and table tops radios. Most are flawed and average.The QODOSEN DX-286 Portable Radio is a great portable radio with some flaws and it comes with (and doesn't come with) some suprising things.First, this is a system on a chip "world band" radio. That means it is capable of picking up more than just AM and FM.Second, this is almost a pocket-sized radio. It's small and it can get loud. You can adjust the EQ on the speaker with two settings - voice optimized or music optimized.Great, selective reception with the built-in extensible mast. This is not ordinarily the case on an inexpensive system on a chip ("homodyne") receiver. It was able to receive signals that I ordinarily cannot receive at my testing location.My interest is usually in the FM broadcast band. The tuning steps can be adjusted and so can the reaction time to the tuning knob (yes, a knob! No pressing up/down buttons unless you want to use that option). It detects the stereo pilot and carrier and will decode in stereo if - and only if - there are headphones/earbods plugged into the 1/8" earphone jack. It also is capable of RDS (US) or RBDS (rest of the world) data. That means, should the reception be good enough to decode the RDS carrier, that you can see the station Program Service text, but also can manually dive deeper and see the Station ID (PI) or the RadioText data stream. In my experience, this is unusual.The buttons may be a little small for some fingers, but they are placed well. You will want to read the lengthy manual, otherwise you may get frustrated by some things not operatng intuitively. Some functions require a short press, others require a lengthy press.Suprising things it comes with: a plastic case with padded interior (depicted). Plus, it comes with a synthetic velvet drawstring bag that can protect the plastic-cased radio from scratches should you choose not to carry the radio around in the hard shell case. It can be powered by a micro-B sized USB or by internal rechargable batteries. The manufacturer cautions not to use a USB fast charger.Surprising things it doesn't come with: batteries. This is disclosed in the listing. Shopping around indicates that the proper sized cells will run you about $15 US in 2024. If you want to use it battery powered, include the cost of that separate purchase into your consideration. Also, somewhat suprising, is that it does not include a long (ish) wire external antenna. There is a jack for one on the radio, this manufacturer chose not to include one. Not a deal breaker, but if you are intent on world band reception, you are on your own when it comes to an external antenna.Overall, this radio jumped to the top of my list of compact portable radios.

An impressive little radioQodosen DX-286 Potable radioI ordered this radio to use while we are staying in a ground floor apartment in a Brooklyn brownstone for several weeks during an annual visit to the east coast to see family for six weeks. This brownstone apartment is a few feet below grade in the front and on grade in the rear, attached on both sides to adjoining brownstones, and has a small yard. Being in a lower-level apartment, other radios I’ve had here on previous visits have had trouble picking up many stations. This radio, however, picks up way more stations and has been great to use. I’ve been using the radio both with wired earbuds, as well as the internal speaker. Overall, I have been really pleased with the unit’s performance. And I can highly recommend this radio.Now, I’m over 70, not really into seeking long distance (DX performance), and only marginally technically proficient. Learning to use the radio’s functions is, and will be, an ongoing process. That being said, what inspired me to try this radio was that the chip installed is a huge step up from what is usually found in small portable radios, coupled with the claim that the reception would be significantly better. I have found that claim to be accurate. This radio picks up plenty of FM stations that I did not get on other small radios I have tried when staying in New York City in similar places. Edit: I tried the shortwave early this morning, I couldn't sleep, and I was able to pick up a station at 5025hz that broadcasts from Havana, Cuba- which was surprising and neat! Another middle of the night session a few days later and I picked up a broadcast from New Zealand- quite impressive.Here are my pros and cons, so far. I will revise this review, if anything major changes, and I hope my review, as a casual user, has been helpful.The first picture is of the radio kit out of the cardboard box. The second picture is just the radio next to an 8 ounce bottle of water, so you can gauge the size.Pros- Sensitive tuning, excellent sound for a small radio, high-quality build, internal and whip antenna, rechargeable 18650 battery, nice plastic case, protective cloth bag, small convenient size, extensive features available, and a nice, detailed instruction manualCons- Mini USB charging input (a USB-C would be better), complicated use for some of the features so there is a learning curve, small speaker given the small size, required battery not included

Great radio. Youtube videos on the DX-286 are very helpful. Check out other online resources too.
This DX-286 radio by Qodosen is the first hobbyist radio that I’ve ordered, and there are many features to learn. Youtube videos on the DX-286 have given me an easy introduction to the options and operation. The videos are a good introduction to “real” radios for newbies like me.This radio has also been discussed on the r/shortwave reddit forum, and on some blogs (search “DX-286” and they’ll pop up). There’s a new public FB group (“Qodosen DX-286 and Qodosen SR-286 Radio Models Multiband Radio Lovers Group”) dedicated to this radio and its sister radio. All of these online resources are great ways to learn.This radio can do many things, but to get started, you can simply listen to the radio and shortwave without using the advanced features.Other reviews here have covered the main points of this radio, so I’ll just remind you that the 18650 battery is required but not included, so make sure you have one on hand (the 18650 is a rechargeable and replaceable battery that is often used in upscale radios and flashlights).I’ve included some photos of the manual. If you’d like to view the full manual, its PDF is available as a free download on the FB group.The Quick-start guide for the radio is a foldout page at the back of the user manual. The print is tiny, so I took a photo and read it on my computer. I’ve included that here.
