Back in South Africa, our daily life has its own unique cadence. In rural areas, mornings often start with the sun's rise, and a simple breakfast of mealie pap with a splash of milk is the norm. Here in Xiamen, the morning routine is different. The city wakes up a bit later, and the breakfast offerings are a delightful medley, from savory dumplings to the crispy youtiao.
Social gatherings in South Africa are often centered around braais. It's a time when friends and family gather around a fire, cook up delicious boerewors and steaks, and spend hours chatting and laughing in a laid - back atmosphere. In Xiamen, while there are outdoor dining experiences like having seafood by the seaside, the dynamics and interactions during these gatherings are distinct. In Chinese get - togethers, there's a lot of toasting, and the conversations are lively, with a focus on sharing a diverse range of local delicacies.
Culturally, South Africa is a rich tapestry of various tribes. In Zulu communities, for example, beadwork is a form of communication, with colors and patterns telling stories of a person's life. In Xiamen, traditional handicrafts like Shuanlian (a unique local paper - cutting art) carry their own cultural significance, yet the techniques and meanings are worlds apart.
There are aspects of life in Xiamen that have been a bit of a challenge for me. The concept of guanxi, for instance, is deeply ingrained here. In South Africa, while relationships matter, they don't play as all - encompassing a role in various aspects of life as they do in China. Here, it seems like it can be a deciding factor in business, job opportunities, and even daily interactions, which can be quite overwhelming for someone used to a more merit - based approach.

The work culture in Xiamen also took some getting used to. The long working hours and high - pressure environment are different from what I was accustomed to in South Africa, where work - life balance is highly emphasized, and people have more time for family and personal pursuits.
However, the advantages of living in Xiamen are numerous. The city's public transportation is quite convenient, with buses and subways connecting different parts of the city efficiently. The beautiful coastal scenery, like the beaches of Gulangyu Island, offers a serene escape. And the availability of 24 - hour convenience stores and delivery services makes life incredibly convenient.
Chinese food, especially the local Fujian cuisine, has become my passion. The light and delicate flavors of dishes like Buddha Jumps Over the Wall are a treat to the taste buds. And don't even get me started on the mouth - watering oyster omelets sold on the street corners.
But what truly makes Xiamen feel like home is the people. They've been incredibly warm and welcoming. They've helped me navigate the city, taught me local phrases like "Xièxiè" (which I still sometimes mispronounce), and invited me to their homes for meals.
My Chinese has come a long way, but I still make mistakes, like confusing similar - sounding words. Thankfully, my friends here are always patient and ready to correct me with a laugh.
Over these six years, I've built many wonderful memories in Xiamen. But there's a part of me that feels a bit empty. I've been thinking that maybe finding a local girlfriend from Xiamen could fill that void. I hope to meet someone who can share this beautiful city with me, introduce me to more of the local culture, and create even more precious memories together. I'm really looking forward to that special connection and seeing where this new chapter might lead.
